Interior vs. exterior paint: what's the difference?

Open cans of paint in warm and neutral colors

Interior and exterior paint can look alike in the can, but they're made for very different jobs. Using the right one makes a big difference in how long the finish lasts.

Exterior paint is built for weather

Outside, paint has to deal with sun, rain, humidity and big temperature swings. Exterior paints are made to stay flexible as surfaces expand and contract, and to resist fading, moisture and mildew.

Interior paint is built for everyday life

Inside, paint needs to stand up to scuffs, cleaning and close-up viewing. Interior paints focus on smooth coverage, washability and lower odor, since you live with them up close.

Why you shouldn't swap them

  • Interior paint used outside can break down quickly in sun and weather.
  • Exterior paint isn't meant for indoor living spaces, which is why it's best kept outside.

Sheen matters too

Flatter finishes hide surface flaws well. Satin and semi-gloss finishes are easier to wipe clean, which is why they're common on trim, doors, kitchens and bathrooms.
